General Notes

Pembroke Dock - 1861 The 15th Brigade Royal Artillery, 1st Battery (The Gunners) The Commanding Officer was Captain P. Dickson, arrived on HMT Himalaya Feb 18th

The first Royal Artillery unit arrived in Australia in 1856 and began a succession of gunner units which ended with the withdrawal of the imperial forces in 1870 resulting in the raising of 'A' Field Battery, NSW Artillery in 1871

“A” Field Battery is the oldest permanent unit of the Australian army. Before 1870 each of the major ports in colonial Australia were defended by the British garrison troops from the Royal Garrison Artillery. At the end of 1871 the Royal Garrison Artillery was withdrawn from the colony of New South Wales and the colonial government passed an act allowing for the raising of a Permanent Military Force to provide the coastal artillery. A Battery, New South Wales Artillery, was formed in August 1871, and was trained and organised to replicate the Royal Artillery.

Amelia may have listed the father of Frederick Worthy as a Draper as this was her occupation?

Notes for Henry John Worthy

Caroline Milgate married Thomas Barrow and moved to Melbourne.  She is listed in Victoria as having 3 children to Thomas Barrow, up to Henry Barrow born in 1863.  Caroline does not appear to divorce Thomas Barrow or remarry Henry Worthy in Victoria.  The birth certificates of Emily and James Worthy state her name as Caroline Worthy, late Barrow born in Sussex England.  After the alledged transfer of her 'husband' Henry Worthy to Gibralter, Caroline remarries William McNaughton (also a gunner in the Royal Artillery) at 45 George St Sydney.  Caroline lists her conjugal status as a 'Widow' which suggests that her marriage with Henry Worthy never existed and that Thomas Barrow is indeed dead.

Caroline McNaughton dies in Sydney at the age of 35.

Merchants House 43-45 George Street, The Rocks

The Merchants House is the most intact example of the typical late Georgian period townhouse (with basement offices, ground floor dining room, first floor drawing room and upper bedrooms) known to survive in NSW. Built in 1848, documentary evidence suggest that it was designed by John Bibb, considered one of the finest Greek Revival architects in Australia. It contains a rare example in Sydney of an intact mid nineteenth century first floor drawing room with its moulded plasterwork, chimney piece and grate, joinery, and cantilevered balcony. The Merchants House contains original elements of high quality including a geometric staircase, cast-iron cantilevered balcony, stonework, surface finishes, door cases, windows, French doors, dormer windows and servant bell system. The house was designed to complement the adjoining warehouse (now the Westpac Bank) built four years earlier.

A map of 1865 shows an extensive yard behind 43 George Street, with two outbuildings. The outbuildings at the rear of 45 George Street continue into the property of 47 George Street. Between 1865-1867 the house was tenanted by William Reilly, the building being described as having three floors and 11 rooms.

41 Burton St Sydney

The Free Church of England was established by William BAILEY (1806-1873), a convict

sentenced to life for forging a promissory note. He was, in later years, an

authorised marriage celebrant, and the Free CofE seems to have been a place

for quick marriages without the trappings and regulations required of a

marriage in the established church.

Research Notes

The story so far....

- Caroline Milgate marries Thomas Barrow in 1857, NSW.  They then move to Melbourne, Victoria

- Jessie Barrow is born 1858, dies in 1861 in Melbourne (parents Thomas and Caroline)

- Louisa Jane Barrow is born 1860 in Melbourne (parents Thomas and Caroline)

- Henry John Barrow is born 1863 in Melbourne (parents Thomas and Caroline)

now it starts to get a bit interesting......

- Henry John Worthy arrives on board "Elizabeth A Bright" in 1861 part of 1st Battery, 15th Brigade Royal Artillery age 25 (i.e. born 1836)

- Henry Worthy transfers to Sydney in December 1864

- Emily Harriet Worthy is born in June 1865, Sydney, parents John Henry Worthy, occupation gunner with RA, age 32 from Hampshire and Caroline Milgate late Barrow, age 28 from Sussex.  Married in 1862 in Melbourne (?)

- Henry Worthy age 3yrs, 8 months dies in July 1867, Sydney , parents Charles Henry Worthy, occupation gunner with RA and Caroline Milgate (i.e. the child born Barrow above)

- Charles James Worthy is born in July 1867, Sydney, parents Henry John Worthy, occupation gunner with RA, age 28 from Hampshire and Caroline Milgate late Barrow, age 28 from Sussex.  Married in 1862 in Melbourne.  There is a note on the birth record that the child was baptised Charles George and the parents were Charles and Caroline Worthy

- Henry John Worthy (batchelor) marries Amelia Howe in July 1867, Sydney. Occupation is a Royal Artilleryman (no age or parents recorded)

- October 1868 1st Battery 15th Brigade leaves Sydney for Gibralter.  Henry Worthy is discharged prior to the brigade leaving.

- November 1868 Louisa Jane Worthy and Emily Worthy are entered into destitute childrens asylum.  Mother Caroline Worthy claiming that father is a gunner in the Royal Artillery and left for Gibralter.

- Caroline Barrow (widow) marries William McNaughton in July 1869 in Sydney. William's occupation is also a gunner with the RA

- Louisa Jane Worthy and Emily Worthy discharged from destitute childrens asylum to mother Caroline McNaughton and step father William McNaughton

- Caroline McNaughton dies in 1873, age 35 years

- Emily and Charles McNaughton (alias Worthy) entered back into destitute childrens asylum in 1874 as mother dead, step father about to enter infirmary.

- Charles McNaughton (i.e. Worthy) dies age 8 in 1876 (drowned in a quarry)

- Emily Harriet Worthy discharged from destitute childrens asylum in 1880

- Henry John Worthy applies to be discharged from the Sydney "Permanent Artillery" in 1874

- Emily Harriet Worthy marries Absalom Palmer in 1887.  Emily's parents listed as Henry Worthy and Caroline Milgate

- Frederick Worthy (birth date unknown) dies in 1896, father Charles Worthy, mother Amelia Worthy

Some points to note

There is only one Worthy i.e. Henry John that is recorded in Australia as serving in the British Army in Australia

There is only one Caroline Worthy in NSW ever recorded

Henry uses all three names of Henry, John and Charles in any combination he feels like at the time.

Henry John Barrow in 1863 is born after the claim of marriage of Henry John Worthy and Caroline Milgate, suggesting that the child was not Thomas Barrows

There is no record of a marriage between Henry John Worthy and Caroline Milgate or Barrow in Victoria

The Barrow children have suddenly become "Worthy's" suggesting that Caroline has left Thomas and moved to NSW with Henry Worthy

Henry Worthy did not leave NSW as stated to the destitute asylum in 1868 as he joined the local "Permanent Artillery", and is not record on the ships muster.

None of the dates provided are consistent, giving ages for Henry Worthy from 1833 to 1838.  Unfortunately the one certificate which could have provided the best indication, the marriage between Henry and Amelia left the age and parents sections blank.  Perhaps the age provided by Henry on the Elizabeth A Bright passenger list is the closest, suggesting a birth around 1836

Caroline Barrow remarries under her previous name Barrow, not Worthy and is a "widow"

The piece that ties all of this together is the Worthy children being discharged to Caroline McNaughton

Unfortunately no Henry, John or Charles Worthy dies in the records I have checked in Australia.  An Amelia Worthy dies in NSW in 1933, which may hold some clues.  Also the death of Frederick Worthy (obviously the Child of Henry and Amelia) may hold some more.

WO69 provides artillery records of service for the periods 1791-1855 for the Royal Artillery and 1803-63 for the Royal Horse Artillery. For Royal Artillerymen discharged between 1856 and 1913, the most important source of service information is usually WO 97: Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers' Documents. If the soldier claimed a war disability pension, it is likely that the papers have been removed and filed either with the PIN71 series of records in the NA or held at:

The Veterans Agency,

Tomlinson House,

Norcross,
