Notes for James Savell

James Savell was born in Araluen, NSW. His birth does not appear to be registered, but his baptism is recorded on Christmas Day, 1868 in Braidwood.

James married Louisa Follan "by the rites of the Presbyterian Church" in June 1885 at Elizabeth Street, Sydney by the Reverend James Fullerton L.L.W. On his marriage certificate in 1885, James Savell's occupation is listed as a Drayman and both James and Loiusa were residing at Enfield. The ages given by James and Louisa were 21 years, but this was later corrected by the registrar to 19 and 20 years respectively. It was noted that consent of the parents was given. There appears to have been some urgency on this marriage with the pending arrival of their first child James Augustus, also born in 1885.

James Fullerton, LLD. (Doctor of Laws)

The Reverend James Fullerton seems to have conducted many irregular marriages in Elizabeth Street, Sydney in the mid-nineteenth century. In July 1851 he was tried in the Supreme Court of New South Wales on the charge of "illegal solemnization of marriage"' and discharged on appeal on a technicality. Later the Registrar General claimed that Fullerton had run a "marriage shop", conducting over four hundred marriages a year. He usually married people in his home which was mostly at Elizabeth Street, Sydney (formerly Simpson's Hotel), although he did move to Woollahra and to Petersham for short periods. This is not unusual for the period. Most Presbyterian marriages were not performed in churches but in private residences, usually the Manse or sometimes the bride's family home.

"Old Chum", the Truth newspaper's regular columnist at the beginning of the century on the characters of old Sydney, described Fullerton in 1913 as a clergyman who "did a very large business in marriages". Truth reported that his residence was a favorite place for couples who wished to be married on the shortest notice. Moreover, people said that the Reverend told his "customers" that there was no charge for performing the ceremony, but the registration fee, which included the "marriage lines" cost one guinea.

"Maybe in the light of the above information, if we find any of our ancestors have a marriage performed by the above Reverend gentleman, it may be worth our while considering the possibility that the parties were under age, had eloped, or were committing bigamy."

James suffered a serious injury in 1889 while cutting wood near Bankstown as this clipping from the Sydney Morning Herald records:

Around 1895, James and Louisa have moved to the Cabramatta area, where James worked as a Wood Carter. He remained in Cabramatta until his death in 1945. They mainly resided in Railway Parade, but James had moved to 109 John St in his last year.
