In 1900, Jimmy Governor, one of two brothers, both red headed aborigines, married a white girl named Ethel Page, 18 year old daughter of a police sergeant at Gilgoa. The girl was ostracised by other white women until finally Ethel came home to her husband Jimmy crying. Jimmy was fed up with the treatment his wife was being given. He called his brother Joe and a friend Jacky Underwood and the threesome went on a killing spree. They proceeded to club women and children killing a total of 11 before the authorities captured them.
The trio proceeded to the Mawbey farm and found the men had all gone to the old house leaving the women and children alone. Armed with nulla nullas and tomahawks they attacked the women and children. Helen Kerz and Elsie Clark, sister of Charles Clark were both clubbed outside the home and left for dead. Elsie recovered but was completely deaf as the result of the beating. 3 women and 2 children were killed at the Mawbey residence. Two of the Mawbey boys escaped by hiding under a bed.
After being captured by the authorities Jimmy Governor and Jacky Underwood were both hanged.
Joe Governor was shot to death.
