4th Division

The division was initially stationed on the Suez Canal. In June 1916 it moved to France, taking over part of the "nursery" sector near Armentieres. Its stay there was brief and soon it was accompanying the First and Second Divisions to the Somme sector. In August 1916 it relieved the Second Division on the Pozieres Heights and repulsed a major German counterattack. It then drove north to the outskirts of Mouquet Farm. A second tour of the Somme at Mouquet Farm followed in September and a third at Flers in October.

On 11 April 1917 the Fourth Division assaulted the Hindenburg Line in the First Battle of Bullecourt. The battle was a disaster and 1170 Australian prisoners were taken by the Germans. In June it participated in the Battle of Messines. In September it participated in the Battle of Polygon Wood.

In March 1918 the Fourth Division was rushed to the Somme region to stem the German Offensive. There it repulsed the advancing Germans in hard fought battles at Hebuterne and Dernancourt. In April its 13th Infantry Brigade was involved in the counterattack at Villers-Bretonneux.

The Fourth Division went on to fight in the Battles of Hamel, Amiens and the Hindenburg Line, finally reaching the town of Bellenglise.

"There was little settlement in the area apart from small timber cutters until 1886 when a large parcel of Crown land was exchanged for the building of a railway line between Guildford and Walkaway. The bankers family named Copeley purchased this land and later sold part of it to the Bunning Brothers Sawmilling Company. The jarrah timber from this area supported the Lion Mill in Mount Helena and later Smiths Mill on Toodyay Road, which remained in operation until the 1960s. During this time the district gradually developed into an area for mixed farming.  "

"The suburb was known as Lion Mill until it was renamed Mount Helena in 1924.  The area is hilly, and largely covered by bushland, revegetated since it was milled to provide fuel for steam trains."

"Mount Helena is one of the towns in the beautiful Shire of Mundaring. Just a half hour's drive from Perth, Mount Helena was originally called Lion Mill, from its early days as a timber town. The Lion Jarrah Mill was one of the early timber mills. Timber from this area was used in the interior of St Georges Cathedral in Perth."

"To gather the timber there were a number of mills, the first, the Lions Mill in what is now Mount Helena (at this time Gidgie was included in that area). Initially, the timber was carted by a rail link from Gidgegannup to Mt. Helena.

Naturally, to fell the trees a large labour force was required as the cutting was by crosscut saws, with a man on either end pulling, later by the Widow Maker, a self propelled circular saw, which, as the name implies, was a dangerous occupation. Many of these trees were quite large, some of the butts over two metres in diameter. "
